Abstract

A panel or a stack of panels P1 of cellular or fibrous elastic material is compressed in a flexible envelope or wrapping M1, M11 while this is open to the atmosphere, and the envelope or wrapping is then hermetically sealed. The degree of compression is less than the elastic deformation limit of the product and the packaging is preferably larger than the equilibrium size which the panel reaches by absorbing air when the compression is removed. In the machine illustrated stacks of panels are compressed between a press 10 and plate 23 on a conveyer, and plastics webs M1, M11 are then heat sealed around the stack. The process may be performed in a purified atmosphere with controlled humidity and the atmosphere may be ionized or otherwise treated.
