Abstract

952,653. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 10, 1962 [Sept. 15, 1961], No. 33182/61. Heading H1D. In a low-pressure lamp, formed by sealing together two moulded enclosure members 2, 3 to form a tortuous discharge channel, at least part of the wall bounding the channel is inwardly convex on one side, 21, and inwardly concave on the opposite side so that in crosssection the discharge channel is of a crescent or (as illustrated) kidney shape. The channel has an internal phosphor layer, and may have an internal or external reflective metal coating. This shape channel gives a short ion diffusion path, short U.V. radiation path, relatively cool extremities of the channel and hence with mercury vapour lamps a lower mercury vapour pressure, and also reduces glare when viewed from the side, 18. Successive crescent &c. shaped portions may be oppositely directed, and may alternate with portions of circular, semicircular, elliptical or semi-elliptical shape.
