Abstract

Metal is subjected to the action of a plurality of individual gas streams, all of which are supplied through a multiple jet having at least three separate supply passages. The particular embodiment described consists of three concentric passages, only one of which is adapted for the supply of high pressure gas, e.g. oxygen. The low pressure gas streams, which may be fuel, oxygen, steam or inert gas carrier, and into which any necessary refining additions such as lime or soda, or fluxes, or carburizing agents such as graphite may be dispersed, are entrained into the high pressure gas stream by injector action. The process may be applied to metal in a converter, rotary furnace or ladle, and may be used to initially melt down a charge of scrap, high pressure oxygen being used in conjunction with low pressure fuel.
