Abstract
<PICT:0983864/C6-C7/1> High phosphorus, particularly basic Bessemer pig iron is refined into steel by blowing oxygen on to the surface of the molten bath, e.g. in a converter, through a blowing nozzle (see Division F4) having an axially disposed duct having an outlet and a concentrically disposed ring of helical ducts each having obliquely directed outlets of smaller dameter than that of the axial duct to provide the issuing oxygen jets with a tangential component of velocity, all the outlet orifices lying in the same plane. Preferably the cross-section dimensions of the orifices are such that one-third to one-half of the total oxygen is supplied through the peripheral orifices. Initially, the nozzle is near the bath surface, then raised, and thereafter raised or lowered to ensure the desired reaction having regard to additions of coolant, e.g. scrap and ore, foaming and the iron content of the slag. For the production of more than two reaction zones on the bath surface, two or more concentric rings of helical ducts may be provided.
