Abstract

Metallic powder, i.e. of aluminium, potassium, sodium, cadmium, zinc, tin, lead, or calcium, is produced by a liquid atomizer (see Division B2) to which the metal is fed in molten form and atomized by a converging stream of compressed gas, e.g. argon. The powder so formed is fed directly from the atomizer to a settling chamber; a pipe leads from the top of the chamber to carry away the gas stream and the finer particles which are subsequently removed by powder separators and gas filters. In one described example aluminium powder was produced of which 85% passed through a 300 mesh sieve, and in another example powdered calcium was produced of which 80% was not more than 44 microns in fineness.
