952,081. Measuring length electrically; micrometers. M. POSSATI. Sept. 8,1960 [Sept. 12, 1959], No. 31030/60. Headings G1M and G1N. Apparatus for measuring e.g. the internal or external diameter of a pipe, comprises spring- loaded caliper jaws associated with a variable capacitor. As shown (Fig.1), a vertical plate 3 carries a first pair of leaf springs 4, 6 supporting a rectangular block 8, and a second pair of leaf springs 5, 7 supporting a similar, parallel block 9. Mounted on the upper surfaces of the blocks are capacitor electrodes 12, 13, the blocks and the electrodes being urged together by springs 10,11. The blocks 8, 9 carry centrally extensions 16, 17 terminating in guides 20, 21 (Fig. 5) on which are mounted lead screws 24, 25 with threaded slides 26, 27 fitted with feelers 36, 37. The slides may be locked on to the lead screws by screws 28, 29. The assembly is adjusted so that with a standard size test piece between feelers 36, 37 the capacitance between electrodes 12,13 produces a zero indication on an indicator. A spring-loaded lever 42 separating the feelers to facilitate changing the test piece, is neutralised as required by a solenoid 47. The slides and feelers may be reversed (Fig. 6, not shown) for internal measurements.
