951,725. Determining infra-red-absorbing gases. BALZERS PATENT-UND LIZENZ-ANSTALT. March 5,1962 [March 24, 1961], No. 8350/62. Heading G1B. A method of determining the quantity of an infra-red-absorbing gas comprises (a) introducing the gas to be tested into an evacuated infra-red absorption measuring chamber (b) introducing a gas which does not absorb infra-red into said chamber to give a predetermined pressure above 20 mm Hg and (c) measuring the infra-red absorption of the gas mixture. The method may be used to determine CO (and hence oxygen) in the gases in a vacuum hot extraction furnace. The non- absorbing gas is preferably dried air, which may be introduced so as to flush the supply duct for the gas to be tested and raise the pressure in the chamber to 1 at.
