Abstract

A process of carburising steel by a gas formed in a furnace chamber by thermal dissociation comprises feeding to the furnace a substance yielding a carburising gas and a substance yielding a carrier gas to provide a gas having a constant composition, controlling the supply of substance yielding the carburising gas by determining the content of one constituent of the waste gas and feeding the result to a device controlling the supply of substance yielding the carburising gas. The carbon dioxide or the water content may be determined, the latter preferably by determination of the dewpoint. The substance providing the carrier gas may be methanol and the substance providing the carburising gas may be ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and water, or acetone. The chamber may be scavenged by the products of dissociation of methanol and both carrier gas and carburising gas may be provided by ethyl acetate.
