Abstract
951,709. Gas-blast switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 4, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 17174/62. Heading H2B. A gas blast switch generally similar to that described in Specification 885,932 has a blast valve for each set of contacts and a supply valve which is closed when the blast valves are open. As shown, the blast outlet to each set of contacts 22, 24 is closed by a sleeve valve 35 resiliently mounted on a shaft 34 and having an annular sealing ring 37. In the circuit closed position shown, the valves 35 are closed with their springs 40 urging them against resilient seatings 39 and the supply valve 41 which is also carried on the shaft 34 is open to allow high pressure gas from a chamber 11, 43 to pass into chambers 36 between the valves 35. When the linkage 48 ... 67 is actuated to open the contacts, arm 67 is moved anticlockwise and this allows springs 17, 44 to move the shaft 34 to the left, opening blast valves 35 and closing the gas supply valve 41 so that high pressure gas from chambers 32 acts on the arcs drawn between the contacts and passes into the low pressure chamber 2. A lost-motion connection 69, 70 between arm 67 and shaft 34 allows contact movement to continue after the valves 35 have been opened.
