Abstract
951,686. Flexible diaphragm compressors. F. ORLITA. Nov. 28, 1961 [Nov. 28, 1960], No. 42546/61. Heading F1N. A compressor comprises a diaphragm 6 which is actuated by a piston 12 through the medium of a pressure transmitting fluid, the diaphragm coming to rest at the end of each compression stroke on a cover 1 having suction and delivery valves 4 and 5, and coming to rest at the end of each suction stroke on a disc 3 having a plurality of small bores 9 therethrough, and a container 15 containing pressure transmitting fluid, the container being provided with a spring-loaded valve 14 which opens when due to leakage a predetermined suction arises in the space 20 between the diaphragm 6 and the disc 3, the make-up fluid being discharged into that space. The compressor is also provided with a spring-loaded piston 24 which is moved by the pressure transmitting fluid when the latter in the space 20 between the diaphragm 6 and the disc 3 reaches a predetermined pressure, the excess fluid passing from the space 20 to a space 28 associated with the piston 24. The piston 24 may be replaced by a diaphragm disposed between two discs having a plurality of bores therein, Fig. 2 (not shown), the diaphragm being loaded on one side by the pressure transmitting fluid and on the other side by the fluid from the space 20. To avoid air being sucked into the space 20 on the return stroke of the piston 24 the latter is combined with the container 15, Fig. 3 (not shown), so that when there is a continued suction only transmission fluid is sucked into the space 20.
