Abstract

951,592. Spinning fancy yarns; thread guides. EASTMAN KODAK CO. June 8,1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 20156/60. Headings D1D, D1F and D1W. In the production from two (or more) multifilament yarn ends of a composite yarn containing randomly spaced, sharp, bulky slubs, one end is passed through a guide moving in timed relation to a second guide (so as alternately to store and release the ends), another end is passed through the second guide whereby each end is alternately fed at a faster and slower rate than the input rate, all the ends are then passed through a bulking gas jet wherein they are subjected to a smooth air flow (which is free from transverse components and sudden erratic changes in the direction of flow) so that the slubs are formed, and the withdrawn composite yarn is taken up in package form e.g. on a twister which inserts three turns per inch of twist. In the final yarn, one end at certain intervals constitutes a core yarn and at other intervals the other end forms the core: excess yarn in the slub consists of a tangled mass of continuous filaments and the core yarn at the slub contains few, if any, filament loops. The component yarns may be identical or differ as regards finish, colour and/or material e.g. cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester, vinyl resins. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, yarns 1, 2, withdrawn from packages 3, 4, through guides 5, 6, and tension guides 7, are advanced by a constant speed roller 8 and pressure roller 9 through a stationary guide 10, separately through guides 11 and 12 mounted on an adjustably reciprocating slubber bar 13 (shown in successive positions A, B, C) optionally through a collecting guide 26, into a jet 14, and slubbed yarn 15 is wound by spindle 16. More than one end may be passed through each moving guide. In the driving apparatus shown in Fig. 3, rotation of a crank arm 17 on a shaft 18, through connecting rod 27, reciprocates bar 13. A pin 21 integral with shaft 18, is engaged by trigger pins 24 randomly spaced along a roller chain 23 (which drives a continuously rotating idler sprocket 22) to compel rotation of shaft 18 through increments of one half a revolution under control of a brake 25 acting on a drum 19. The speed of chain 23, the throw of arm 17, the length of rod 27 and/or the spacing of the guides and jet may be adjustably varied to regulate the dimensions, form and frequency of slubs. The bar 13 may be driven by hydraulic or air cylinder, one revolution clutch and crank arm or solenoid (not shown). Specification 818, 157 is referred to.
