A frame 2 supporting a side broom 1 is connected to a road sweeping machine 15 by links 12 pivoted on bearings 16 on the frame, the axis of the bearings being located farther away from the machine than the centre of gravity of the broom and frame assembly so that the assembly tends to swing away from the machine towards the road kerb under the influence of gravity. Outward movement of the broom is limited by engagement of a roller 17 on the frame with a cam track 18 on the machine and inward movement by engagement of a resilient buffer 19 with the machine. Means for adjusting the height of the frame 2 comprises a chain 20 connected to the frame at 29 and to a pair of arms 22 pivoted on the machine at 23, Fig. 2B. Pivoted on the arms 22 at 26 is the ram 24 of an hydraulic cylinder 25 itself pivoted to the machine at 27. A bar 36 secured at 37 to the machine has a screw section 38 at its other end which is screwable into a collar 31 by rotation of a crank handle 33 secured to a sleeve 30 on which the collar is rigidly mounted. The sleeve is rotatable within a bearing 34 mounted on trunnions 35 between the arms 22. The relative adjustment of the screw section 38 and the collar 31 determines the extent to which the frame may be lowered, contact between the bearing 34 and the collar terminating the sliding of the bearing on the sleeve 30. When the broom is raised, the collar 31 remains to indicate the desired height of the broom assembly to a subsequent operation of the machine. The angle of the broom to the frame is adjustable by an hydraulic cylinder 39.
