A band grinder comprises an endless abrasion band 10 passing around rollers 11, 12 and past a work station 14 at which it is supported by a backing surface 15, one 11 of the rollers being oscillated in a plane perpendicular or parallel to the surface of the band to reciprocate the band in a direction transverse to its normal direction and angularly adjustable in a plane perpendicular to the plane of oscillation to control the tracking of the band. The roller 11 is supported on a spindle 16 pivotally connected at one end to one arm 17 of a yoke 19, the other end of the spindle being adjustable by a screw 21 along the other arm 18 of the yoke whereby the roller is angularly adjusted in the plane of the working surface of the band to control the tracking of the band. The yoke 19 has a stern 20 rotatably mounted in a bearing block 26 and its lower end in acted upon by a rod 27 of a cylinder 28 to control the tension in the band. A rod 33 is pivotally connected at one end to the arm 17 of the yoke and at the other end to the stem of a T-shaped lever 35, the arms of which are connected respectively to a double acting piston-and-cylinder device 39 and a piston 40 in a cylinder 41. Operation of the device 39 causes oscillation of the yoke to effect reciprocation of the band normal to the direction of band travel. With the device 39 in operation, the cylinder 41 may be operated to centralize the roller. In another embodiment, the band runs over three or more rollers, one of which effects the oscillating and tracking movements and another of which controls the tension in the band. The working run of the band may be arranged to run horizontally instead of vertically as shown.
