Abstract

951,078. Saturable reactors. SONY CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1961 [Sept. 12, 1960 (2)], No. 30714/61. Heading H3B. A circuit with variable tuning comprises either a series or a parallel arrangement of a semi-conductor diode 7 and a saturable inductor 5. The two reactors are linked to a control, shown as a battery 8, so that the inductance L, Fig. 3, drops as the control current I increases and the capacity C, Fig. 2, drops as the control voltage E increases. In Fig. 1, inductor 5 and diode 7 are series connected to terminals 11, 14. The battery 8 drives a current through winding 4 on core 3 of inductor 5. The inductor may be biased with a permanent magnet 6. In a modification, Fig. 4, the inductor 5 is biased by the permanent magnet 6 and the effect of control voltage EL and winding 4 is to counteract the bias and increase the inductance. As the potentiometer contact 20 moves to the right, the inductance and the capacity of the circuit increase together to lower the tuned frequency. A change in the voltage of battery 8 tends to decrease the capacity and to increase inductance or vice-versa leaving the tuned frequency substantially unchanged.
