Abstract
705,242. Magnetic amplifiers. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET Sept. 12, 1952 [Sept. 22, 1951], No. 22932/52. Class 40 (4) A temporarily acting D.C. control signal applied to a magnetic amplifier causes an alteration in the output which persists after the signal terminates. The extent of the output alteration may also be determined by the duration of the control signal. As shown in Fig. 1, the amplifier has a three-legged core 1 carrying A.C. load windings 2, 3 and a D.C. winding 5, the centre leg being traversed only by D.C. flux and comprising a portion 4 having a high remanence and coercive force. The manner of operation is shown in Fig. 2 in which i1 is a D.C. bias current giving a load voltage corresponding to point F. When a D.C. control current i2 is applied, the load voltage rises to point B and falls only slightly to point D when the control current ceases, due to the wide hysteresis loop. In a circuit arrangement, Fig. 3, the load windings 2, 3 are energized in series with a load 12 from an A.C. supply 10 and are connected with rectifiers 7, 8 to provide auto-excitation. A self-magnetizing winding 5 is energized from a rectifier 11 while a bias current corresponding to il is applied to winding 13. The control current acts in winding 6 over a delay circuit comprising a capacitor 15 and a resistor 16 and its polarity and duration is determined by contacts 18 and 19. Due to the delay circuit, the extent of output variation depends on the time a contact 18 or 19 is closed. The delay circuit may alternatively be connected in the self-magnetizing circuit or the output circuit and may comprise a capacitor, an inductor or a thermistor.
