Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerized by means of a catalyst comprising an organo aluminium compound and one or more boric acid esters in the presence of one or more unsaturated polymerizable compounds. Preferably the polymerization is effected in the presence of an oxidizing agent, e.g. sulphur, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen tetroxide, bromine or iodine. Specified unsaturated compounds are vinyl acetate, vinyl stearate, ethylene, propylene, diethyl maleate, vinylidene chloride, allyl chloride, dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene and acrylonitrile. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a liquid medium, e.g. tetrahydrofuran or petroleum ether. Examples describe the polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of trimethyl borate and (1) triethyl aluminium, bromine and vinyl acetate; (2) triethyl aluminium, bromine, vinyl acetate and trichlorethylene; (3) tributyl aluminium, iodine and ethylene; (4) triethyl aluminium, nitrogen tetroxide and diethyl maleate; (5) triethyl aluminium, diethyl maleate and 1,2-dichlorethylene or allyl chloride; (6) triethyl aluminium and acrylonitrile; and (7) triethyl aluminium, sulphur and vinylidene chloride. The products may be washed with methanol and hydrochloric acid.
