Abstract
Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst made by contacting at elevated temperature a halogenated organic compound with a metal oxide which is (i) an oxide of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table or (ii) a mixture of oxides of class (i), or (iii) a mixture of one or more oxides of class (i) with alumina, the mixture containing not more than 60% by weight of alumina or (iv) a compound obtained or obtainable by the reaction of components of a mixture of class (ii) or (iii), the halogenated organic compound being contacted with the metal oxide in the absence of a metal halide. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1, butadiene, isoprene and styrene. Examples describe the polymerization of propylene and 4-methyl pentene-1.ALSO:Polymerization catalysts are made by contacting at elevated temperature a halogenated organic compound with a metal oxide which is (i) an oxide of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table, or (ii) a mixture of oxides of class (i), or (iii) a mixture of one or more oxides of class (i) with alumina, the mixture containing not more than 60% by weight of alumina, or (iv) a compound obtained or obtainable by the reaction of components of a mixture of class (ii) or (iii), the halogenated organic compound being contacted with the metal oxide in the absence of a metal halide. Specified metal oxides are the oxides of Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, U, and Ti, the latter being preferred. The halogenated organic compound may be CH2Cl2 or CCl4. Fluocarbons may also be used, e.g. CF4, CH2F2, and CHF3. Examples are given. The metal oxide may have a surface area above 250 sq.m./gm.
