Abstract

An insulating coating is applied to the surface of a piece of electrical equipment by covering one of two separated areas of the surface with a uniform coating of a self-curing mixture of two plastic components which are separately non-curing. Before this coating has cured, at least that part of the zone of separation of the areas bordering the uniform coating is coated with a layer of one component with none of the other component or with less than is present in the self-curing mixture. The other area is then covered with a uniform coating of the mixture having the same thickness as the first coating. At least the part of the zone of separation which borders the second uniform coating is then coated with a layer of the second component with none of the first component or with less thereof than the self-curing mixture, thereby completing over the zone of separation a composite layer having the same thickness as the uniform layer. The composite layer is kneaded, e.g. with a putty knife, to mix the components thereof and finally any uncured parts of the covering are cured. The layers applied in the zone of separation may each consist of one or other of the plastic components, and each have a decreasing thickness as compared with the uniform coating, or each may be of the same thickness as the said coating but have gradually diminishing amounts of one or the other component as the distance from the respective boundary of the uniform coating increases. The two plastic components may be differently coloured, to assist in producing uniform mixtures. They may be prepared from dimethyl or methylphenylsiloxanes mixed with quartz and divided into two parts, one part being mixed with an aliphatic silicate, e.g. ethyl silicate, ethyl polysilicate, allyl orthosilicate or propyl orthosilicate, and the other with a curing catalyst such as lead octoate, dibutyl tin diacetate, cobalt naphthenate or tin octoate. The invention may be applied to filling in the gaps which occur at the supports which are required when objects such as large electrical coils are coated. Specification 764,246 is referred to.
