Abstract
950,276. Magnetic holding devices. DARWINS Ltd. Dec. 1, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 40869/59. Heading H1P. [Also in Division B2] A magnetic separator includes a conveyer band of plastic material in which has been compounded powdered permanent magnet material having a coercive force of at least 800 oersteds, the band being magnetized perpendicularly to its surface. The band passes in a downward direction round a rotatable drum of high magnetic permeability and is diverted from the drum before returning to the surface thereof. As shown, a conveyer band 1 is magnetized through its thickness in bands, or stripes, e.g. transverse or longitudinal, of opposite polarity and passes around a mild steel drum 3. Plates 4, 6 of mild steel back the upper and lower runs respectively of the conveyer. Pieces of ferro-magnetic material 7 mixed with non-ferrous material 8 bridge pairs of opposite poles on the upper face of the band, the magnetic circuits on the inner face of the band being completed by the drum 3 and the plates 4, 6. When the pieces 7 reach the end of the plate 6 remote from the drum 3 they are no longer sufficiently attracted to remain on the band and drop into a container 10. A scraper 11 removes any small ferrous pieces from the band and the non-ferrous material 8 falls into a container 9. Rubber, polyethylene and P.V.C. are specified for the plastic band and the powdered magnet material may be of barium ferrite. Specification 950,275 is referred to.
