Abstract

An explosive composition comprises a fibrous felt-like mass containing a high explosive compound and an elastomeric binding material. Said composition contains 50-85% by weight of the high explosive and may optionally contain 0.5-30% by weight of a fibrous material, preferably cellulosic, e.g. paper pulp, cotton, but may be e.g. rayon nylon, polyesters or acrylic resins. The composition is prepared by dissolving the high explosive and the elastomeric material in a mutual solvent, e.g. acetone, mixing the solution obtained into a liquid, e.g. water, which is miscible with the solvent, but is itself not a solvent for either of the constituents, and filtering off the precipitated composition of elastomer and explosive. The composition is dried, and if desired pressed to increase its density, and formed into a sheet. The precipitating liquid, i.e. the water, may contain a dispersion of the fibrous materials mentioned above, and also part, or all, of the finely divided high explosive may be dispersed therein. The high explosives specified are PETM, RDX and HMX, or mixtures thereof and the elastomeric compounds are copolymers of, for example, vinylidine fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, butadiene and acrylonitrile, butadiene and methacrylonitrile; and also chloroprene polymers. Specification 765,305 and U.S.A. Specification 2,459,126 are referred to.
