Abstract

An explosive composition comprises 85-90% by weight of a crystalline high explosive in fine particulate form with a bimodal particle size distribution which is bound in a visco-elastic binder of which 3-25% by weight is a finely divided highly fluorinated polymeric halocarbon. The high explosive may be RDX, HMX, PETN, or tetryl. Suitable visco-elastic binders are polyisobutylene and polypropylene to which may be added a plasticizer, for example ethyl oleate, dibutyl phthalate, and di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate. The preferred fluoropolymer is polytetrafluoroethylene, but reference is made also to polyhexafluoropropylene and polytrifluorochloroethylene. The composition may be prepared by mixing a water slurry of the explosive with the binder, draining, and passing the mixture repeatedly through differential knurled rollers. The composition may be dried and rolled to form an explosive sheet useful to harden metal surfaces or form, shape, or demolish metal articles.
