Wire or metal strip to be strapped around parcels is fed from a reel to a reserve container where it is accommodated in loops, and from thence to the strapping machine. The reserve container 6, Figs. 2 and 4, comprises two glass plates 7, 8 defining a space 16 in which the loops are contained, a frame 10 and distance-pieces 9 supporting the plates, a detachable insert 11 mounting inlet and outlet ducts 14, 13 for the strapping wire, and means 30-35 which regulate the supply of wire to the container. The insert 11 is reinforced on the outside by a longitudinal bar 18 having slotted end portions 22 which overlap slotted ends 23 of the frame 10, and in position the insert is clamped to the frame by nuts 27, and by screws 24 having square heads 25 slidably engaging in the aligned slots 22, 23. In operation the insert 11 is first removed by slackening the nuts 27 and sliding the screws 24 into the slots 23, and the wire is then threaded externally of the container between rollers 35 and through the ducts 14, 13 and the insert replaced. A switch 34 then operates to drive the rollers 35 and feed wire into the container, the feed continuing until the loops of wire pivot a counterbalanced lever arrangement 30, 31, 32 to the full-line position shown, where a roller arm 33 is swung to break the switch. As the wire is used by the strapping machine the counterweighted levers swing anticlockwise and cause the switch 34 to make and re-start the wire feed rollers 35. One or two protective walls 47 may be provided. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) a short cranked pivoted lever may in one position support a long straight pivoted lever so that wire may be threaded through the container. When the threading is complete, the short lever is momentarily moved away to release the long lever and allow wire to feed into the container, the feed continuing until the loops of wire pivot back the short lever and break a supply switch.
