Abstract

949,884. Latch fastenings. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 9, 1961], No. 44140/61. Heading E2A. A motor vehicle compartment has a hinged cover securable by a latch comprising a pair of stiff but resilient wires each coiled about a fixed support 20, 22 and having portions extending therefrom which are bent and arranged so that the wires provide on the one hand a pair of spring catch members 12, 14 engageable with a striker 34 and on the other hand provides a pair of springs 24, 26 arranged to exert an opening force on the cover. In the construction shown the catch members cross each other to leave a gap between them through which the striker enters to force them apart so that after the striker has penetrated a certain distance the wires can engage underneath projections 29a, 42a the projections being longitudinally separated so that one member 14 acts as a safety catch member and the other member 12 as the main catch member. The cross-over of the wires permits the striker to be released by pressing the free ends 12B, 14B together. The springs 24, 26 of the wires beyond the supports 20, 22 are turned downwardly and then laterally so that when the catch member 12 is engaged with the projection 42a lateral portions of the springs 24, 26 press against a part 27a of the striker so that when the striker is released the bonnet is moved upwardly by the springs 24, 26. The supports 20 and 22 are pins carried by a bracket 11 attached to the bonnet and the springs 24, 26 extend through holes in this bracket. Movement of the catch members is guided by a casing 38 secured to the bracket 11.
