Abstract

949,578. Washing machines. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 9,1960 [Dec. 31, 1959], No. 42521/60. Heading D1A. A washing machine comprises a flume 24 spaced from the machine backguard and having separate passages for respectively directing high-pressure fresh water into the clothesreceiving opening of a basket 6 and low-pressure fresh water into a receptacle surrounding the top of the basket to flow through holes 6c into the basket. The receptacle is formed by an annular flange 6a on the basket 6, which is contained in a tub 4 to the wall of which is screwed the flume 24. The receptacle holds a balance ring 6d of concrete the top surface of which slopes towards the holes 6c. The flume 24 has a flattened-tubular spout 25 divided into upper and lower passages 43,44 by a plate 47 which fits in slots in the side walls of the spout and has a hole 56 and upturned side flanges 54 (not shown) and 53. To the rear of the spout 25, the flume 24 has a trough portion 33 the front end of which is divided by a central block portion 40 into two channels 41 (not shown) and 42, the ends of which overhang the receptacle formed by the flange 6a. The lower spout passage 44 is connected by a passage 57 in the block portion 40 to a pump for returning used sudsy water to the basket 6. An injector tube 35 connected to the fresh water supply points at the open rear end of the upper spout passage 43 from above the trough 33 so that high-pressure water from the tube 35 enters the upper spout passage 43 and low-pressure water drops into the trough 33. The said pump is primed by water from the upper spout passage 43 entering the passage 57 through the hole 56. The basket 6 contains an agitator for washing and is rotatable about a vertical axis for spin-drying. The fresh water is at a preselected temperature. The machine is usable with a separate sudsy-water storage tank 7 (Fig. 1, not shown).
