Abstract
949,503. Exhaust silencers. INDUSTRIAL ACOUSTICS CO. Inc. Sept. 26, 1960 [Oct. 6, 1959], No. 33053/60. Heading F1B. An acoustic attenuating duct comprises at least two opposing and generally mutually parallel cell units 30, 31, which are contoured and spaced to provide a constricted region I in the passageway 15, at least one of the units tapering away from the other unit to define a divergent and truncated exit section X having an included angle greater than 7 degrees in the passageway. The hollow interiors of the cell units may be filled or lined with a sound absorbent material such as glass fibre 35. Perforations 36 may cover entrance region E, intermediate region I and exit section X and may also be provided on trailing surfaces 37, 38. The surfaces in the entrance region E may be imperforate and convex or straight with flared leading and trailing edges. Ducts can be arranged in series or in parallel. Dimension wa may be equal to of the attenuated frequency, ws is less than 2 wa and r is equal to wa. The perimeter area ratio in the region I may be greater than 5/6.
