In a light metal piston having expansioncontrolling inserts 2 of a metal having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the light metal, the inserts are located in pairs on each side of the gudgeon-pin bosses 3 on the inside of the piston skirt and the portions 5 of the skirt wall between the inserts 2 are substantially thicker than the portions 1 adjacent the inserts. Openings 4 in the inserts 2 are filled with light metal when the piston is cast.
