Abstract
949,299. Universal joints. WAGNERHOCHDRUCK-DAMPFTURBINEN G.m.b.H. Dec. 21, 1962 [Dec. 22, 1961], No. 48444/62. Heading F2V. A universal joint for use in the drive to the propeller of a ship comprises resilient bolts 11 arranged chordally between inner and outer rings 3, 13 of the joint to transmit torque under tension, the ends 10 of the bolts being threaded into support bolts 9 pushed into flanges 6 . . . 8 around the periphery of the inner ring and nuts 19, 21 at the opposite ends of the bolts allowing adjustment of the effective bolt lengths, for equalization of the load transmitted through each bolt. Holes 16 in the outer ring 13 receive the nuts 19, 21, &c., and also packs of spring washers 18 which may be pre-stressed by tightening the nuts. Either the nuts may be castelled, as at 19, or cone-shaped as at 21, a cap 23 securing the latter. To transmit torque in both directions, two oppositelydirected bolts 11 are screwed into each support bolt 9. Flexing of the bolts 11 permits relative axial and/or radial movement of the inner and outer rings 3, 13, the bolts either having a rectangular cross-section, or alternatively being slotted, to increase their resilience, Figs. 3a, 3b, 3c (not shown). As shown, the inner and outer rings 3, 13 are bolted to a shaft 1 and a sleeve 14, respectively, and the latter is in turn bolted to the outer ring 17 of another similar universal joint.
