[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for a rod mill comprises welding plant for welding together end to end a succession of billets to form one or more continuous billet streams, one or more post weld furnaces through which the stream or streams pass to the mill, and automatic control means for each furnace responsive to the temperature of the individual billets so that all the streams enter the mill with approximately the same uniform temperature. As shown in Fig. 2, billets from a scrambler 12 pass to furnaces 14 and 20 along conveyers 13 and 21 and after ejection by pushers 19 and 22 pass to a conveyer 25 either directly or by way of conveyers 23 and 24. Welding plants 27 fuse the billets by passing a very heavy current through them and applying a pressure of approximately 2 t/in.<SP>2</SP> to force them together, four streams of billets being possible. Each medium frequency induction furnace 28 through which a stream of billets passes has a pyrometer 30, an amplifier 31 and control equipment 29 to ensure that the streams attain a uniform temperature. The billets then pass to stands 17, 18 and so on of the rod mill. After rolling, the rod is sheared, and to ensure that shearing takes place adjacent a weld in the rod, the shears are controlled by a detector which detects either hot spots in the continuous product or α-ray emitting particles placed at the weld junctions in the welding plant. Alternatively, the shears may operate to cut off equal weights of rolled product, the speed and section of the rod being measured to control the shears in this case.
