A process and apparatus for forming sintered shaped bodies, strips or sections from metals or alloys such as steel, A1 and Cu comprises granulating the molten metal or alloy and directly fabricating the hot particles by pressing or rolling without any further heating of the particles. As shown in Fig. 1 a continuous process of forming strip comprises granulating the molten metal in a centifuge or spray 10, the temperature of the particles being controlled by a stream of air or a protective gas from fans 17, the particles are then discharged via 18 on to a shaking trough or channel 19 provided with a hood 20 which optionally may be heated to maintain the temperature of the particles and transported to the rolling mill 21 via feeding device 22. The flow of particles to the rolls may be controlled by a flap valve 31 or wedge 32 in the feeding shaft 22, the valve deflecting some of the particles into a by-pass 30 (see Fig. 2) and back into the outlet 18 of the granulator 10. A dosing strip balance (36) may co-operate with shaking trough (19) to regulate the speed of conveyer belt (37) and so control the rate of powder feed to the rollers Fig. 3 (not shown). In alternative embodiments Figs. 5-8 (not shown) a rockable or slidable deflecting funnel is used to deflect the powder from the rolls and thus control the feed of powder. The whole process from granulation to the formation of the strip may be carried out in a protective atmosphere.
