Abstract
Apparatus for the heat treatment of wire which is passed through at least one heating zone in which it is heated by means of an electric current comprises control means responsive to changes in the speed of the wire for varying the heating current in order to reduce variations in the temperature of the wire leaving the heating zone due to changes in the wire speed. As shown, wire 2 passes through an annealing and reheating machine 1 before it enters an extruding machine 3 which provides the wire with a covering, e.g. of insulating material. During its passage through the machine 1 the wire passes over sheaves 8 to 14 as illustrated, sheave 9 being electrically connected to a supply line 24, sheave 10 to a supply line 25 and sheave 11, 13 and 14 to a return line 28. The sections 30, 31, 32 of the wire constitute a pre-heating zone, the section 33 which passes through a pipe 34, containing non-oxidizing atmosphere and terminating in a quenching bath 35, constitutes an annealing zone, and sections 36, 37 constitute a re-heating zone. <PICT:0949035/C3/1> <PICT:0949035/C3/2>
