Abstract

948,914. Change-pole electric motors; control of A.C. motors. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1960 [Oct. 16, 1959], No. 35074/59. Headings H2A and H2J. A three-phase, squirrel-cage motor having pole-changing by pole-amplitude modulation is arranged to run at intermediate speeds by differentially energizing the motor windings in the pattern appropriate for both polenumbers simultaneously, i.e. varying the applied voltages in a simultaneously opposite manner to produce the speed required. The windings may be as described in Specification 926,101 or 900,600 in which, in one mode the windings are each energized between their ends 11, 12; 11<SP>1</SP>, 121; and 11<SP>11</SP>, 12<SP>11</SP> respectively, and in the other mode between these ends joined together and through an additional winding connected to a centre-tap 13, 131, 1311. The two modes of energization are provided by a differential voltage regulator 20 which may be of various types, e.g. an induction regulator as shown. The tapping-points 14, 141, 1411 are energized directly from the regulator to give parallel-star operation. The other mode of connection, which is effectively a series star or delta connection, is achieved through a transformer 40 having primary windings 41, 42, 43 and secondary windings 51, 52; 53, 54; 55, 56 connected across the motor windings. The secondary windings are centre-tapped to star-point 60 to provide a path for the parallelstar currents of the other mode.
