Also in Division H4] The invention relates to an electron beam source having a cathode and a control electrode, the electron beam from which is controlled by a remote beam of radiation impinging on a photoresistive element, so connected in the supply to the cathode of the electron beam source as to vary the positive potential of the cathode with respect to the potential of the control electrode of the electron beam source. As shown, the positive potential of a cathode K of an electron beam source, with respect to a control electrode S is varied by the change in resistance of a photoresistive element W1 such as a cadmium sulphide resistor, when the intensity of a radiation beam b impinging on the element W1 is varied. The beam b which originates from a source L may be varied by a potentiometer W2 connected across a voltage UL, by grey filters F or other colour filters, or by a continuously adjustable screen B. These measures for varying the intensity or colour of the beam b may be used in combination as shown. The photoresistive element W1 may comprise a single element or a plurality of elements in series, in which case the elements may be controlled by a single radiation source or each may be provided with its own source.
