Abstract
Wool and mixtures thereof with cellulose are dyed with the water soluble salts of copper phthalocyanines containing at least two -SO3H groups or one -SO3H group and 1-3 sulphonic acid amide groups in an aqueous bath containing condensation products produced by heating 1 mol of fatty acids having at least 8 carbon atoms with 1-3 mols of low alkanolamines having alkanol groups containing up to 5 C atoms while eliminating at least 1 mol of water, the starting materials being so chosen that there are in all at least 3 alkanol groups in the alkanolamines and on using more than 1 mol alkanolamines per mol fatty acids, there is at least one hydrogen atom bound to the amino nitrogen atom, per molecule of fatty acid. The preferred condensation product is prepared from 1 mol of coconut oil fatty acids and 2 mols diethanolamine with the elimination of 1-2 mols of water. Dyeing is preferably carried out from a bath containing ammonium sulphate and, if desired, other additives such as sodium sulphate and a non-ionic dispersing agent at or near the boil. When dyeing wool mixed with cellulose fibres the ammonium sulphate may be replaced by acetic acid and a wool reserving agent such as a formaldehyde condensation product of a phenol sulphonic acid. Examples are given of dyeing wool and wool/viscose rayon blends with a copper phthalocyanine containing an average of 2.5 sulphonic acid groups per molecule. U.S.A.
