Abstract

Nitrogenous fibres are dyed with an aqueous preparation containing a solution or dispersion of a wool dyestuff and an assistant which is capable of forming with water or with water and an additive a two-phase liquid system, the proportional amounts of water which may contain additives and the assistant being within the miscibility gap or in its vicinity, with the miscibility gap occurring even at a relatively low content of assistant and the phase richer in assistant making up a substantial part of the aqueous preparation within a large range of the miscibility gap and thereafter subjected to a heat treatment. Suitable fibres are polyamide, regenerated protein, silk, furs, leather and especially wool, if desired, blended with, for example, acetate rayon, polyester or cellulose fibres (at least 45% wool). Suitable dyestuffs are acid, chroming, cobalt and chromium 1:1 and 2:1 complex, sulphonated phthalocyanine, reactive and sulphuric acid esters of leuco vat dyestuffs. The ratio of water to assistant or to assistant and additives (which may be sodium chloride, acetic acid and alginates) is preferably chosen so that the preparation forms a homogenizable two-phase system and is in the vicinity of the ratio which just produces a saturated solution of assistant. A particularly suitable preparation is in the form of a coacervated hydrophilic colloidal solution. The assistant may be the reaction products of higher fatty acids with hydroxyalkylamines and if desired, with ethylene oxide preferably coconut oil fatty acids and triethanolamine or more advantageously diethanolamine in the molecular ratio of 1:2 with the optional addition of 2-15 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of product. The preparation may be applied, preferably continuously, by padding or printing especially to obtain Vigoreux effects on wool slubbings. Wool may be dyed or printed without previous degreasing or chlorination and loose wool may be impregnated immediately after leaving the last vat of a leviathan washer and being thoroughly squeezed. Thermofixation is preferably carried out by steaming at temperatures up to 180 DEG C. A treatment in an aqueous acid (e.g. formic) bath may be included. Examples of dyeing or printing of wool and wool blends, polyamide, leather and sheepskin are given.
