An underground mechanical garage consists of an upper storey or storeys served by an inclined rampway and lower storeys in which the vehicles are mechanically handled for storage in a conventional cellular arrangement of parking locations, the base area of the latter arrangement being less than that of the storey or storeys served by the rampway. In the example shown the rampway comprises the ramps 6, 6a extending respectively between ground level 0 and the upper underground storey 1 and between this storey and the next lower storey la. Beneath is the mechanicallyoperated garage structure 7, with its parking cells 2, extending over a base area less than that of the lower ramp-served storey 1a which in turn is less than that of the upper storey 1. The whole garage is accommodated above the lines 9 which define the limits of the region which can be excavated without damage to the foundations of existing buildings 3.
