Abstract
Ethylenically unsaturated organic monomers are continuously polymerized in emulsion or solution in a cylindrical reactor which contains baffles, e.g. distributer plates or sieve plates, or packing, e.g. balls, Raschig rings or Berl saddles. The monomers may be vinyl or vinylene compounds, e.g. styrene, an ethyl- or methyl-styrene, a chlorostyrene, a divinyl-benzene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic or methacrylic esters, e.g. butyl acrylate, vinyl chloride or fluoride, vinylidene chloride or fluoride, 2-chlorobutadiene, butadiene, isoprene or a vinyl ester. Mixtures of monomers may be used. The packing may have an individual item diameter which is 1/5th -\ba1/40th of the reactor diameter.
