Abstract
White acrylonitrile polymers are made by polymerizing acrylonitrile alone, or if desired with at least one other ethylenically unsaturated compound, in aqueous medium in the presence of a peroxy-sulphoxy redox catalyst system, in a weight ratio of sulphoxy to peroxy of from 2.0 to 4.9 to 1, at a temperature of from 40 DEG to 55 DEG C., and allowing the monomers a dwell time of from 40 to 60 minutes in the polymerization zone. The other monomer may be vinyl acetate, styrene vinylidene chloride, or methyl acrylate. All these comonomers are exemplified. The exemplified catalyst is potassium persulphate, sulphur dioxide, and iron. The reaction is terminated with oxalic acid. The polymerization may be carried out by a continuous process.
