Abstract

Vinylidene monomers and monomers containing more than one ethylenic double bond are polymerized at at least 100 DEG C. using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as catalyst in the presence of at least sufficient solvent to maintain a homogeneous liquid phase between the monomer and the aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Specified vinylidene monomers are styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, trialkyl cyanate, phenyl maleic acid and acrylonitrile while butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, hexadiene and 2-chlorobutadiene are specified dienes. Specified solvents are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, or propanol, isopropanol, dimethoxy ethane, methyl cellosolve dioxide or an azeotropic boiling mixture of a hydrocarbon liquid e.g. toluene and a C1- 4 alcohol or of an alcohol e.g. methanol and a ketone e.g. acetone. A hydrogen peroxide stabiliser e.g. boric acid, a chain transfer agent, a modifier and an antioxidant may also be present. Part of the aq. hydrogen peroxide may be added initially and part later e.g. intermittently.
