Abstract

Styrene, with or without derivatives such as p-chlorostyrene, 2,4-methylstyrene and divinyl benzene is polymerized by heat in the presence of dicumyl peroxide as catalyst. Mass, solution, for example in toluene, methanol, or methyl ethyl ketone, emulsion or suspension methods may be used. In examples, styrene is polymerized in the presence of dicumyl peroxide and in the absence of oxygen (1) by a mass process; (2) in aqueous suspension containing magnesium hydroxide to give beads; (3) in aqueous emulsion using potassium laurate and the product is precipitated and washed with ethanol.
