Abstract

1430677 Bulk polymerization of acrylonitrile MONTEDISON FIBRE SpA 22 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24385/73 Addition to 1337162 Heading C3P Acrylonitrile, alone or in admixture with up to 50 molar per cent of at least one ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, is polymerized in bulk by a process using (a) a continuous or semi-continuous polymerization procedure, (b) 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azo - bis - (2,4 - dimethyl - 4 - methoxyvaleronitrile) as a free radical catalyst, (c) a reaction or dwell time Q of sufficient duration to allow the catalyst to decompose to at least half its initial concentration, and (d) a concentration of catalyst which is at least equal to 2À10<SP>-3</SP>.Q moles/litre where Q is the dwell time in hours. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of small amounts of chain transfer agents (e.g. mercaptans) and organic diluents. Optional comonomers include (meth)acrylate esters, unsaturated ketones, vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl ethers, styrene and alkyl styrenes, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl fluoride, methacrylonitrile and butadiene. The acrylonitrile polymers obtained are stated to be even whiter and more heat-resistant than those described in the parent Specification 1,337,162.
