Abstract

947,789. Lubrication. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 16, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 6702/61. Heading F2A. Apparatus has relatively movable parts and comprises means for supplying a lubricant to a ball race 16 between sleeves 14, 15 therein, from which excess lubricant may drain into a sump chamber 18, an elongated pipe 21 and means for effecting relative rotation between it and the sump chamber 18 (Fig. 1) which has a narrow opening 35 (Fig. 3) through which the pipe 21 may be introduced thereinto only when the pipe 21 has a predetermined first disposition relevant to the opening 35, after passing through which it is moved by cam means out of the said disposition into a second disposition, in which the end of the pipe 21 is adjacent the interior of the wall 17 of the chamber 18, against which lubricant is forced centrifugally and withdrawn through the pipe 21, when the said relative rotation occurs. The end of the pipe 21 in the chamber 18 is then substantially tangential to the interior of the wall 22 so that lubricant on it is scooped into the pipe 21. The pipe 21 takes up the first disposition when a cam flange 24 rides over a sleeve 15 on moving the pipe 21 towards the chamber 18. After passing the flange 34, the pipe 21 is rotated into the second disposition by contact of a cam flange 25 with a cam abutment member 36 (Fig. 5). The flanges 24, 25 are on a cylindrical member 23, which carries the pipe 21 communicating with it. The sleeve 15 forms part of an engine rear bearing within which a shaft 13 is journalled, integral with or connected to the chamber 18 for rotation therewith, and carrying a compressor 11 and a turbine 12 of an aircraft engine 10. The lubricant could be withdrawn from the chamber 18 by keeping the chamber 18 stationary and rotating the pipe 21 into and out of the lubricant pool therein.
