Abstract
<PICT:0947722/C3/1> A modified form of the annealing apparatus of the parent Specification comprises a transformer designed for frequencies up to 100 c.p.s. as compared with the apparatus of the parent Specification for which a frequency range of 100 to 2000 c.p.s. is specified with a preferred figure of about 500 c.p.s. The transformer core has one limb 6 upon which the primary winding 32 is wound, and one or more limbs 4, 5 forming gaps 6a, 6b through which the loop or loops 35a of wire forming the secondary winding is or are passed before the heated wire enters the cooling tank 1. The core has a removable yoke 7, and the primary winding 32 is fed through the tap-changing switch 56 of an auto-transformer 55. The wire 35 passes over an entry pulley 36 into a box (not shown) containing an annealing atmosphere of steam, hydrogen or cracked ammonia, and is formed into loops 35a by motor-driven contactor sheaves 10 and 11. On leaving the box the wire passes over a guide pulley 37 carried by a quenching arm 19 mounted for pivotal adjustment in the tank 1, and thence through a cooling column 46 and an air wiper 49 over a pulley 50 to a take up or spooler (not shown). Water is pumped from the tank 1 to the top of the cooling column 46 by a pump 47. A practical form of the apparatus is described.
