Abstract

In a process for annealing bare, work hardened copper strand, the strand 10 is drawn from the supply reel 11 (Fig. 1) over grounded pulley 16 and passed through inductive choke 17 and around the insulated, adjustable (Fig. 3, not shown) lead-on pulley 22, head pulley 26 and spring tensioned tail pulley 27, to be intertwined on itself to form a loose, running tie 23, thereby forming the electrically closed loop 28 (see Division H5). After the said electrically closed loop has been inductively heated (see Division H2) by transformer assembly 42 (see Fig. 2), it is passed over a second adjustable pulley 31, pulley 30 and through inductive choke 32, to a liquid CO, cooling nozzle 33, small amounts (less than 1 part in 104) of CO being added to ensure a non oxidizing atmosphere in the hermetically sealed housing 21. The strand is electrolytically cleaned before being passed through an insulation coating extruder 12 on to a take up reel 13, Various means of adapting the speeds <PICT:0943268/C3/1> <PICT:0943268/C3/2> of rotation and positioning of the pulleys, to take up any thermal expansion of the strand and to stop snapping thereof, are described.
