Abstract

947,662. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Aug. 22, 1961 [Oct. 12, 1960], No. 30230/61. Heading F2S. In a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber 2, 3 in which the flow of liquid through a port 23 from one side of the piston 2 to the other is controlled by a corresponding flattened groove 24 in a lower cylindrical part 22 of a regulator bar 14 rotatably mounted within a hollow piston rod 1 the bar 14 is connected by means of a spiral guide 12 to a regulating piston 9 which is charged with compressed air e.g. from a pneumatic vehicle suspension system. The piston 9 works in the upper part 8 of a housing 6, 8 the lower part 6 of which is clamped to the piston rod 1 by means of a nut 19 and has secured therein a guide 7 from the hollow rod 11 of the piston 9. The nut 19 also secures the rod 1 to a chassis part 5 through the intermediary of rings 20. Balls 13 carried by the upper end of the bar 14 engage in the spiral groove 12 in the interior face of the rod 11 which is guided vertically by balls 13 which co-operate with vertical grooves 17 in the guide 7. A bore 10 in the housing part 8 is connected either through a valve, operable by a driver, to a source of compressed air or directly to a pneumatic spring which adapts the shock absorber to the momentary state of the load. In a modification of the spiral guide means the spiral groove is formed in the guide bar and the balls 13 are carried on the interior face of the rod 11. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the cylindrical end 22 of the regulating bar 14 has an oblique surface 26 which co-operates with the bore 23.
