Abstract

A method of forming a yarn ply comprises twisting a number of yarn strands together in a first direction from a zero position, each strand possessing an initial twist of given magnitude in the first direction; thereafter twisting the strands in the opposite direction to return to the zero position; and continuing the twisting in said opposite direction through the zero position to an extent approximating to the given magnitude of the initial twist possessed by a yarn strand. Continuous fibres of synthetic or semi-synthetic material are reduced to staple fibres and then spun to form the yarn strands. To fix the initial twist in the yarn strands the strands are wetted by steam or moisture. After the intertwisting in the first direction the yarn is wound on either metallic or cardboard tubes and subjected to steam to set the twist. After twisting in the opposite direction the yarn is subjected to heat and/or dyed so that an elastic yarn is formed. The fibres may be of nylon, cellulose triacetate or a mixture of nylon with viscose or cellulose triacetate.
