Abstract
<PICT:0946863/C3/1> <PICT:0946863/C3/2> In the ultrasonic cleaning of the surfaces of small obejcts or particulate materials, e.g. sand, grinding wheel particles, tumbling media, ball bearings, nuts and bolts, and other small articles used in precision machinery, the objects or materials are introduced into a cleaning fluid 12 contained in a vessel 10 where they are allowed to move freely in or through the fluid whilst being subjected in zone 19 to surface cavitation caused by a sonic field of energy produced by transducers 22, e.g. operating at frequencies of 3 kc./s. to 2.5 mc/s. Preferably the objects or materials are continously fed into the bath at a constant rate by a vibrator 40 and allowed to fall freely through a shoot 18 wherein an ultrasonic field of 20 kc./s. is maintained, prior to being continuously removed by the belt conveyer 24; the transducers 22 may be coupled in a circular arrangement (see Fig 3) so that the ultrasonic intensity within the shoot 48 is greatest at its centre 12 where only a narrow stream of material is allowed to fall.
