Abstract
Anhydrous crystalline zirconium tetraacetate is prepared by heating a solution of a monochlorozirconyltriacetate acetic acid complex in a mixture of acetic anhydride and acetic acid so as to drive off acetic acid and hydrogen chloride, the resulting zirconium tetraacetate which precipitates in the remaining acetic anhydride being recovered and dried. The heating is preferably carried out at a reduced pressure of about 40-50 m.m. Hg. and a temperature of about 60 DEG C. and may be terminated when about two-thirds of the volume corresponding with that of the acetic acid originally introduced has distilled over, the remaining mixture being treated with an oxidising agent, preferably hydrogen peroxide, at about 110-120 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure to remove the residual chlorine content. The solution of the monochlorozirconyltriacetate acetic acid complex may be obtained by (1) dissolving zirconinm tetrachloride in glacial acetic acid at 50-60 DEG C. to give a solution of a dichlorozirconyldiacetate acetic acid complex which is then treated with acetic anhydride; (2) dissolving zirconium oxychloride hydrate in acetic anhydride; and (3) dissolving polymeric zirconium oxychloride in a mixture of acetic anhydride and acetic acid. The corresponding bromides or iodides may be used in place of the chlorides. The tetraacetate may be readily converted to soap of higher aliphatic acids such as zirconium octoate or stearate.
