Abstract
946,290. Universal joints. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. April 26, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2839/59. Heading F2U. In a coupling of the type in which torque is transmitted by a flexible tube, in order to prevent changes in the axial length of the coupling when under load and to more readily accommodate angularity of the shafts which are to be coupled, the tubular member over an unsupported portion of its length has a wall of externally concave hyperboloidal shape. As shown, a tube 4 of reinforced rubber-like material has flanks 4b of hyperboloidal form on either side a crest 4a the shape of which is maintained by an annular U-section insert 5 of pressed steel. The ends of the tube are secured to end fittings 1, 2, which can be bolted to shafts which are to be coupled, and the thickness of the wall of the tube gradually decreases from each end towards the crest. The reinforcing material in the tube has its threads disposed so that they lie approximately along the lines of tension in the tube when it is under torque. Metal reinforcing rings 17 are moulded into the tube 4 at each end. Each end fitting comprises parts 6, 8 having screw threads 10, 12 of opposite hand engaging screw threads at the end of the tube 4, and the parts 6, 8 are restrained from relative rotation by pins 3. A centralizing device for the coupling comprises a ball member 23 fast with the end fitting 2 cooperating with the socket 20 fast with the fitting 1. If axial movement of the shafts to be coupled is to be accommodated the socket 20 is replaced by a cylindrical guide. In order to accommodate a larger angularity the tube may comprise a number of convolutions, each with hyperboloidal flanks and a rigid crest.
