Abstract

946,217. Control systems for space discharge apparatus. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 25867/63. Divided out of 946,216. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H1] In a thermographic contact copying apparatus a flash lamp 35 having electrodes at opposite ends of an elongated portion of the lamp envelope filled with a noble gas such as xenon at a pressure of from 500 to 760 mm. Hg and the bore of the elongated portion being not more than 2 mm., and having a trigger electrode 42 mounted parallel to but separate from the narrow bore portion, is supplied from a storage capacitor 84 charged by a half-wave rectifier unit. To ensure that the rate of feed of the assembly of original and copy paper past the lamp is so related to the frequency of the radiation pulses from the lamp that the assembly is uniformly irradiated, a double cam 60 geared to a roller which feeds the assembly through the machine controls the time at which charging of the capacitor 84 starts and the time at which the trigger electrode 42 is energized from the capacitor 88. The main switch 75 having been closed to energize the machine drive motor 46, the entry of an assembly of original and copy paper into the machine closes a switch 74 which energizes a time delay relay 102 which in turn releases a latch 66 on the shaft of the cam 60 and energizes a relay 107 completing the primary of the transformer 77. The purpose of relay 102 is to ensure a further flashing of the lamp after the original and copy paper have allowed the switch 74 to open. When this has occurred the cam 60 is held by its latch 66 in the position shown so that both capacitors 84, 88 are held discharged. If a power failure occurs a switch 94 normally held open by a relay 93 closes to discharge the capacitor 84 through resistor 92 and interlock switches 111 have the same effect if the machine cover is opened, while opening of the main switch 75 has the same effect also. In order to maintain the lamp output constant in spite of mains fluctuations, the voltage across the capacitor 84 is kept constant by a voltage divider pick-off circuit 112 which by co-operation with a constant reference voltage &c. via transistor amplifiers 119, 121 alters the impedance of a winding 132 in the charging circuit. The description is identical with that of Specification 946,216.
