Abstract

945,391. Automatic voltage control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 16, 1960], No. 1559/61. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] In an automatic electric control system for the contactless parallel connection of voltage regulated rectifier equipments incorporating magnetic amplifiers, a control winding of the magnetic amplifier of an equipment to be connected in parallel is supplied via a rectifier from a current transformer which is connected in the alternating current circuit supplying the total current of the equipments. As shown, a load 17 is supplied at constant voltage from an alternating current supply through a rectifier 3 and a magnetic amplifier 1 having an auto-self-exciting winding 1a, a bias winding 1b and a control winding 1c energized from the auto-self-excited winding 5a of a regulating magnetic amplifier 5 responsive to the load voltage across a control winding 5c. A rectifier 10 and magnetic amplifier 7 are connected to the load 17 and controlled through a magnetic amplifier 13. A winding 13b is energized by the load voltage through a resistor 16 and opposes the flux in a control winding 13c energized from a current transformer 4 responsive to the total current from the supply. At a predetermined total current the flux due to winding 13b equals the flux due to winding 13c and the regulating magnetic amplifier saturates the controlling magnetic amplifier 7 causing a current to flow in a current transformer 8, which acts upon the winding 13b of the regulating magnetic amplifier. The constant voltage, derived through resistor 16, is short-circuited by a rectifier 15 so that the regulating magnetic amplifier 13 is now controlled by the current from the current transformer 4 and the current supplied by the current transformer 8, the current being divided in the same ratio between the rectifiers throughout the range of loading. When the load current falls below a certain value, the rectifier 10 is taken out of service. In a modification a plurality of rectifier equipments are connected in parallel as the total current rises, each successive equipment being controlled by a current transformer responsive total current of the prior connected equipments and itself.
